Function

Its prominent anterior (carotid) tubercle is the landmark where emergency responders compress the carotid artery against to control haemorrhage. Transmits the C6 nerve root to wrist extension.

  • C5 above
  • C7 below

Clinical relevance

The C6–7 level is a frequent site of spondylosis; the carotid tubercle guides anterior cervical surgical approaches.
