Origin

Posterior manubrium and first costal cartilage.

Insertion

Oblique line of the thyroid cartilage.

Action

Depresses the larynx after swallowing; covers and borders the thyroid gland's surgical plane.

Nerve supply

Ansa cervicalis (C1–C3).

Blood supply

Superior thyroid artery.

Clinical relevance

It lies directly on the thyroid lobe; when it must be divided in thyroidectomy it is cut high, because its ansa cervicalis nerve supply enters from below.
