Acute bronchitis

Short-term inflammation of the large airways, almost always caused by a virus. The cough can last up to three weeks but antibiotics rarely help.

Causes
- Viruses (rhinovirus, influenza, RSV, coronavirus)
- Occasionally Bordetella pertussis or Mycoplasma

- Smoking
- Recent cold
- Asthma

- Cough, dry or with sputum
- Chest soreness
- Mild fever
- Wheeze

- Clinical diagnosis; chest X-ray only if pneumonia is suspected
Treatment

- Paracetamol or ibuprofen
- Antibiotics are not recommended unless there is pneumonia or high-risk illness
