## Current models — Z-Anatomy (CC BY-SA 4.0)

The male model (`atlas.json`, `za-*.bin.gz`) and the muscles, bones, joints
and ligaments, vessels, nerves and most organs of the female model are from
**Z-Anatomy — The libre 3D atlas of anatomy** by Gauthier Kervyn and Marcin
Zielinski (https://github.com/Z-Anatomy/Models-of-human-anatomy), licensed
CC BY-SA 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/), itself derived
from BodyParts3D (© DBCLS). Adaptations: exported from Blender with
modifiers and curve bevels applied, converted to metres / Y-up, simplified
with meshoptimizer, packed; fascial sheets omitted; the male body surface,
hair and lips are the matching BodyParts3D meshes. For the female model the
structures are carried into the female body by a smooth thin-plate-spline
deformation fitted to the Visible Human Female CT skeleton and the female
body surface. **These adapted model files are shared under CC BY-SA 4.0.**

Adaptations: axes and units converted from millimeters/Z-up to meters/Y-up; translated to rest at the stage; geometry simplified using meshoptimizer with 0.2% relative error limit per structure; normals quantized to signed 16-bit; packed into binary chunks; curated display system groupings and colors. The source contains 2,234 individual OBJ meshes; all remain represented. The combined hierarchy contains 3,432 named FMA concepts, which may reference multiple meshes. Original source identity is preserved in the manifest.

Source OBJ comments mention an older CC BY-SA 2.1 Japan license. The official current database license linked above supersedes that legacy text and explicitly permits redistribution and adaptation under CC BY 4.0.

BodyParts3D represents an adult male reference anatomy based on TARO MRI and anatomical illustration refinements. It is not a complete model of every possible human anatomical structure or variation. This interface is educational and is not a clinical tool.

## Male body surface (`atlas.json`, `ccm/`)

- **Body surface, skin textures, eyes, eyelashes, nails and boxer briefs —
"Realistic Human Male Body (Rigged, GameReady)"** by VTR3D (CGTrader,
Royalty Free Licence, no AI), fitted around the Z-Anatomy male anatomy
(`tools/characters/`). The character is a Reallusion Character Creator 3+
figure; Reallusion's own licence terms apply to its base mesh.
- **Hair — "Male Hairstyle Short01 (low poly, game ready)"** (CGTrader, free,
Royalty Free Licence, no AI): hair cards seated on his head by
`tools/characters/add_hair.mjs`, texture tile recoloured with an alpha
  derived from its background.
- **External genitalia (skin)** — the previous BodyParts3D-derived male's
genital skin (CC BY 4.0, above), carried onto him (unclothed mode only).

## Female model (`atlas-female.json`, `fz-*.bin.gz`)

- **Anatomy — Z-Anatomy** (CC BY-SA 4.0, above): the same complete atlas as the
male model, scaled to the stature of the Visible Human Female skeleton. The
hip bones and sacrum are reshaped to the **Visible Human Female CT pelvis**
  (BoneHub `visible-human-3d-models`, CC BY 4.0) by a smooth, fold-free
thin-plate spline that carries the surrounding muscles, vessels and nerves
with them, so every attachment is preserved. Male reproductive structures
  are omitted.
- **Female reproductive organs and breast tissue — Human Reference Atlas**,
  united-female v1.10 (HuBMAP/CCF 3D Reference Object Library, CC BY 4.0),
placed by the rigid CT-pelvis registration.
- **Body surface, skin texture, eyes, hair, eyebrows, eyelashes and sports
outfit — “Rosey”** by Mr shub (RenderHub, Extended Use Licence), fitted around
the anatomy (`tools/rosey/`). The character is built from DAZ 3D Genesis 8.1
content; DAZ's own licence terms apply to those components.
- *Previous body surface (kept as a fallback build):* **MakeHuman**
hm08 base mesh, targets, proxies and skinning weights (CC0 1.0), re-posed to
the anatomy's arm position and fitted around it (joint centres, soft-tissue
depths over palpable bones, clearance over muscle and bone).

Build: `tools/female-za/build.mjs`. Structure reference texts in
`za-defs.json` come from Z-Anatomy's definitions (largely Wikipedia, CC BY-SA
4.0); build with `tools/zanatomy/defs.mjs`.

## Historical assets (not included in the current release)

The male body surface and eyes come from the previous BodyParts3D 4.0 male
build, kept outside the repository as a build input (see `tools/README.md`).
Earlier female builds (v2, v3.1, v4) are retired. They used BodyParts3D, HuBMAP
female organs (Kristen Browne and Heidi Schlehlein, *3D Reference Organ Set for
Female v1.5*, 2023, CC BY 4.0, https://doi.org/10.48539/HBM352.BTSQ.586) and
MPFB/MakeHuman.
