Origin

Lateral border of the ischial tuberosity.

Insertion

Quadrate tubercle of the greater trochanter.

Action

Laterally rotates the hip and steadies the femoral head.

Nerve supply

Nerve to quadratus femoris (L5–S1).

Blood supply

Inferior gluteal artery.

Clinical relevance

The ascending branch of the medial circumflex femoral artery — the main blood supply of the femoral head — runs deep to it, and the sciatic nerve crosses its posterior surface.
