Peroneus longus

Origin

Head and upper two-thirds of the lateral surface of the fibula.

Insertion

Plantar base of the first metatarsal and medial cuneiform, tunnelling across the sole.

Action

Plantarflexes and everts the foot; its plantar sling buttresses the transverse arch.

Nerve supply

Superficial peroneal nerve (L5–S1).

Blood supply

Peroneal artery.

Clinical relevance

Its tendon clicks around the lateral malleolus in subluxation; it crosses the cuboid's tunnel where painful os peroneum syndrome develops.
